AFSCME's 43rd International Convention is quickly approaching. The theme is Rise Up, and through actions, trainings and activities, you will have many opportunities to Rise Up in Boston.  Plan ahead to get the most out of your week. Check out these tips to make sure you’re ready to Rise Up to the challenge!

Delegate Guide: The delegate guide is your handy pocket guide to everything that’s happening. Find shuttle schedules, maps, workshop descriptions and more. You will get a copy in your convention bag, and you can find the information on the convention website.

Getting Around: Get a discount on airport shuttle fare when you make your reservations online.

What to Wear: Summers in Boston can be hot. Bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself. No matter how hot it may get outside, the convention center will be air-conditioned, so you may want to bring a sweater. There’s lots of walking, so be sure to pack comfortable shoes, and don’t forget those AFSCME shirts and pins.

Delegates’ Happy Hour: Mark your calendar: On Sunday, July 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., swing by the Delegates’ Happy Hour. The theme is “A Night at Fenway,” and you’re encouraged to wear your favorite team colors (whatever sport you wish). There will be lots of ballpark snacks, fun and music. The happy hour is open to all credentialed delegates, alternates and guests of the AFSCME 43rd International Convention. Please secure AFSCME credentials in advance of the happy hour.

First-Time Delegates and Alternates Briefing: Is this your first time attending an AFSCME International convention? There’s a lot to take in and learn. But don’t panic. There’s an information session just for first-time delegates and alternates on Sunday, July 15, 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. You have questions? We have answers.

Rise Up Institute: The AFSCME “Rise Up” Institute gives you the chance to dig in on learning in four critical areas: Organizing, Political Action, Communications and Representation. Select a track and supercharge your union-building power. In addition to track workshops, additional courses include leadership development, organizing by work sectors and planning. Avoid the lines at workshop registration and sign up for your classes now to save your spot. Register for workshops here.

Rise Up Action Center: The Rise Up Action Center is the place to be. Delegates will gather to hear from special guest speakers, take actions, participate in fun 10-minute trainings and learn about the issues facing our union. Check the interactive AFSCME Power Grid to see how the actions are playing out across the country in real time.

AFSCME Advantage: AFSCME Advantage partners and vendors have many great offers and discounts for AFSCME members. Be sure to check out all the booths and try the interactive activities like AT&Ts hands-on text-and-drive simulator.

The Collaborative: The Collaborative is where you can get creative and connect with other delegates. Back by popular demand, you can Bling It On and accessorize your AFSCME clothes. And just around the corner from this creative space, you will find a state-of-the-art FlipDisc wall. Stand in front of it and see how it reacts to your movements. Put yourself in the AFSCME Mosaic. Together, we will snap selfies and other pictures at Exhibit Hall photo booths to create a massive AFSCME mosaic.

Rise Up in the Public Service: AFSCME members know that public service is in our DNA. In Boston, delegates and guest will get a chance to participate in a community service activity to help underserved students in Boston’s public schools. Together, we will prepare backpacks with school supplies, educational materials and inspirational messages. This activity will take place in Hall B on Wednesday, July 18, and Thursday, July 19. Please plan to participate.

Child Care: Complimentary child-care services for children of AFSCME delegates and alternates will be available at the Westin Boston Waterfront hotel (mezzanine level near the Sky Bridge to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center) from Saturday, July 14, through Friday, July 20, while the convention is in session. Licensed, bonded and insured service providers will care for children between ages 3 months and 12 years, though space is limited for children under 2 years of age. Also, as per a 2012 resolution, the children will be educated on the value of unions in America while in our care.
